Alvernia University – About

Alvernia University is a Franciscan Roman Catholic institution of higher learning in Pennsylvania that is privately owned. It was once called Alvernia College, then it later attained its university status in 2008.

The university was established in the year 1958 by the Bernardine Sisters of the Third Order of St. Francis first as a four-year liberal arts college and college for sisters. In 1961, the college enrolled its first lay female students. It enrolled its first male commuting students in 1971, and in 1973, the first male resident students got enrolled.

Alvernia offers well over 50 undergraduate minors and majors. The school has pre-professional programs in medicine, dentistry, law, pharmacy, and veterinary studies.
